Electrician
Working at the House of Commons has been a change from any other job I have had and the work I do is more maintenance based as opposed to installation based. It's nice having a structured style of working, knowing which hours I will be doing and having a good work-life balance. I also like being in the Palace and think the surroundings are really interesting!
Joe's Profile
I joined the House of Commons after being the successful candidate in a recent Electrician campaign; I found the process to be very smooth and had a lot of contact with my HR Representative. My day to day work involves maintaining the electrical infrastructure of the Palace and the other buildings on the Parliamentary Estate.
I find that my colleagues are very team-orientated and customer-focused. There is a degree of flexibility which I like in the teams and we liaise with each other and fill in by helping when needed. As I am a fairly new starter, I have been on many courses welcoming me to the House and making sure I am fully trained regarding health, safety and the manual handling procedures. I believe this all helps to make me a better electrician and a part of the HoC workforce.
Its different working in a place like the HoC meeting MPs and Lords and I find myself appreciating the architecture and art. The Palace of Westminster is a very impressive building and it's a great place to be a part of.
