HR Adviser
From the outside a lot of people don't realise that the House of Commons is a normal place to work. Working here you find that it is very supportive and that there are lots of opportunities for you to develop. I appreciated the help the House of Commons gave me when I wanted to change careers. I feel quite honoured knowing that I have access to such a beautiful and amazing building with such history and prestige!
Lindsay's Profile
My main responsibilities involve handling recruitment of staff for the House; this will range from the initial job description and advertising to the arrangements of the selection process, interviews and any letters and documentation required. Our team is involved right up until the successful candidate starts work. Our role involves a lot of administrative tasks and organisation, as well as an ability to prioritise conflicting deadlines.
My job requires good communication and interpersonal skills and a strong grasp of teamwork. I learnt these skills as a chef, but when I wanted a change and to learn something new I found they were easily transferable to recruitment. Starting at the bottom of the ladder again in a new department was daunting but I was welcomed, encouraged and supported from day one. I now have a new qualification in HR with many more opportunities available to me.
It's been an eye opener working at the House of Commons. I now realise that besides the official duties and history you associate with the Houses of Parliament, it is still a normal place of work with lots of exciting opportunities for everyone.
