Nigel's Profile

My current role in the Pay Policy Unit covers many aspects of reward, an area of particular interest to me.  Being involved with pay negotiations is very interesting, watching the tactics that both management and the trade unions adopt in order to reach agreement.  Our team implements a pay award once it has been agreed; this involves doing a lot of calculations in order to pay staff on time.  We also get numerous queries from staff once it has been implemented in respect of what it actually means to them.  This has given me the opportunity to meet with colleagues from the various departments within the House.

Part of the pay negotiation process involves being aware of what is happening in the Civil Service as the House stays broadly in line with their terms and conditions.  This is interesting as it has made me aware of the policies and procedures being adopted within many government departments.  In order to facilitate this exchange of information the House hosts regular meetings of reward specialists from other organisations. I am secretary to these meetings and find this particular aspect of my role very rewarding.

I have found the family friendly policies adopted by the House very useful especially as I have children.  I receive child care vouchers which help towards child minding fees and have also been able to make reasonable adjustments to my working pattern.  This together with the leave entitlement makes the House a great place to work.
