Welcome

Welcome to the House of Commons

We are a high-performing, professional and diverse organisation, with staff from a range of backgrounds working in a wide variety of different roles. We are all dedicated to delivering the highest standards of service to the House of Commons, its MPs and the public.

We are not civil servants; we support the Legislature, not the Executive, we are politically impartial and we have the unique privilege of directly supporting Parliamentary democracy.

We want talented individuals to join our team, who share our commitment to these objectives, and want to be part of a dynamic and modern organisation.

In regular surveys our staff consistently report that the House of Commons is a good place to work; a tribute both to the organisation itself and to the unique challenges and rewards of a career in Parliament. We value our staff highly, and are committed to helping everyone reach their full potential: it is only through individuals that we can deliver the high quality services that the House requires.

The origins of Parliament go back to Saxon times when the Witenagemot, a council of wise men, was consulted by the King. However it was not until the Model Parliament, which was summoned by Edward I in 1295, that representatives were sent from each county, borough and city.
